V: Tell us a bit about yourself?

J: I was born In the UK, moved to Canada when I was 14. My wife, daughter and I moved to GP 3 years ago for work.

C: I was born in Brampton, Ontario and lived in Ontario all my life until 3 years ago when we moved to GP as a family

J: I was born in Brockville, Ontario and I’m 5 years old. I moved to here when my family did!

V: How long have you been a member at VO2Max?

J,C,J: We have all been members of V02max for 2 years since 2017!

V: What lead you to start your fitness journey at VO2?

J: I’ve always been interested in CrossFit, a friend of mine owns a box in Ontario and I tried a couple of classes there. But the real interest came after I watched the fittest on earth on Netflix.

C: Jamie kept watching and following tons of CrossFit stuff online and kept talking about them here. He wanted to go check it out and asked me if I would try it and I said sure why not give it a try!

Jalyn (our daughter) started utilizing the childcare when we came which made it super accessible for us to want to come as well as she now is old enough to partake in the children’s programming, which she loves! She pushes us as a family to want to go to CrossFit 4-5 times a week. If we miss it she is so upset and asks daily if it’s CrossFit today?!?

V: What is your favourite workout/movement?

J: Squat cleans are my favourite movement. AMRAPS are my fav workout. Anything with multiple movements together.

C: My favourite movement has to be deadlifts. I am getting stronger each time we lift and hope to be able to do more upper body things like pull ups some day!

J: My favourite thing to do so far is the rings and flips on the rings! I’m like a monkey when it comes to them!

V: What do you do for work?

J: I work as a gas/oil operator for NuVista Energy.

C: I work for a company in Edmonton called GRIT and I’m an ASaP Coach. I mentor and coach child care staff in the ELCC sites in GP and area!

J: I go to school 2-3 times a week for kindergarten

V: What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

J: One thing you didn’t know about me is I’m a 2 time Ironman triathlon finisher and am currently training for Ironman 70.3 Victoria.

C: One thing you didn’t know about me is I love to bake and I use to own my own cupcake business in Ontario!

J: One thing I love to do is use the monkey bars!

V: If there’s anything else you’d like to add, please feel free!

VO2Max has brought our family closer together. CrossFit is a huge part of our lives. All 3 of us really enjoy spending our time at the box and truly consider it our home away from home. We are grateful for the friendships we have made and VO2Max is our fitness family! We love it there and it pushes us daily to be healthy and fit and show our daughter what that looks like!

V: Tell us a bit about yourself?

M: I am 39… 40 years old in June!! I moved here from Edmonton in 2001 to work as an EMT for the EMS service in GP. After I got my Advanced Care Paramedic license in 2003 I decided to stay a while. A while has now turned into almost 18 years!! I married my husband Chris in 2009 and we’ve since had 2 boys; Taylor in 2010, and Keets in 2011. We have a very busy life with 2 boys, our work schedules, and hockey, hockey, and more hockey!!!

V: How long have you been a member at V02Max?

M: I started coming consistently in January 2017. I had dabbled coming here over the years prior but I was always terrified walking through the door!

V: What led you to start your fitness journey at V02Max?

M: I was very unhappy and frustrated with my fitness and overall health at the time. I had tried other programs and places in the past and none of them stuck! Melissa Jim helped get me through the door and kept encouraging me to come. The atmosphere was so inviting and inspiring that I just kept coming. Soon I realized just how much I loved all the things that V02Max had to offer and I have never looked back.

V: What is your favourite workout/movement?

M: I have a nagging back injury so since November I have been doing Fitbot…which much to my surprise, I love!! Recently I have been working with Janine and I feel like I’ve hit the trainer jackpot!! Prior to Fitbot I was a dedicated bootcamper – 0915 being my favorite because I love Crystal!! Leaving bootcamp was so hard because of her and the awesome group of bootcampers during that class!!

V: What do you do for work?

M: I am a Paramedic in a supervisor position with Alberta Health Services EMS. I am also a dedicated hockey mom…which is basically another full time job!!

V: What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I love hunting…specifically bow hunting!! My husband got me in to bow hunting about 5 years ago and after years of practice and a lot of patience I finally harvested my first animal this last fall!! I also love wakeboarding!! As long as my body will allow it I’ll be that lady out on the water every chance I get!!!

V: If there’s anything else you’d like to add, please feel free!

V02Max is like a second home for me. The friendships I have gained and the amount of support I feel every day makes me very grateful to have this place to come to!!! I am truly honored to be chosen as March’s athlete of the month. Thank you <3

V: Tell us a bit about yourself?

T: I am 26 years old and I have spent the last 9 years in Grande Prairie. I grew up on a grain farm 20 minutes from the bustling metropolis of Hines Creek, Alberta (130 km North of Grande Prairie). T: In the past I ran on a cross country running team, so I did a lot of running. I wanted to try incorporating some different movements into my workout routine. I went to a few bootcamp classes and I really enjoyed them… until one morning the lovely Priscille Cameron convinced me to give crossfit a go. I’ve been faithfully attending since! I do really love it.

V: What is your favourite workout/movement?

V: Tell us a bit about yourself.

D: I was born and raised here. I grew up in Sexsmith. I have lived in the Peace region pretty much my whole life.

V: How long have you been a member at VO2max?

D: Gee, I can’t remember exactly. Can you look it up? I was at the other location for quite a while …. 5 years ?

V: What lead you to start your fitness journey?

D: Our office was just across the parking lot from  the previous  VO2Max location. A few of the people from work had started a group membership. They said how great it was, and I watched some of the workouts, so I joined about a month or so after they started. There are several of us from the original group still training today.

V: What is your favourite workout / movement?

D:I like weight training, but I like pretty much anything really, as I need the aerobic fitness as well as the strength.  I like the circuit type wods. But Mike my trainer will say I whine about any workout equally! I lack the discipline when comes to eating, but I am working on it. Of course I hate  burpees- who doesn’t?

V: What do you do for work?

D: I have worked in IT (informations Technology) for 18 years, and recently stated in sales of business computer and network systems. I am a desk jockey so the need for regular exercise is very important- sitting most of the day is obviously not good for you.

V: What is one thing people would be surprised  to learn about you?

D: Surprising? Hmmm, that is a tough one. This may not be surprising, but since I joke around a lot at the gym, people might be surprised to learn I am actually very shy.

V: If there is anything else you want to add feel free!

D: As much as I enjoy the physical exercise it is the great atmosphere that keeps me coming back. I workout with an awesome group of people, who I have a lot of fun with. I have a great trainer Mike who has helped me make some real progress over the years. Actually, from what I have seen, all the staff at VO2max are great in my opinion. I really look forward to coming to the gym, which is why you may have seen me around quite a bit.

Three years ago I was 95lbs and had no strength at all. I was so inflexible that I couldn’t even touch my toes and I had never tried yoga. After my first month, I loved yoga so much I booked a two week trip to India. My husband thought I was nuts!

V: If there is anything else you want to add feel free!!

S: I am so grateful to everyone at VO2, it has really changed my life to be accepted as part of a team that works hard and is so supportive. Thank you!

E: Cleans and HSPU

V: WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?

E: Hockey was a huge part of my life, but since I found CrossFit, I would rather attend a CrossFit class then go play a game of hockey.

C: I would rather do burpees then run!

V: IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD, PLEASE FEEL FREE!

C: VO2Max has made me stronger, not only physically, but mentally as well. CrossFit is not always done as a team but you have other athletes around you, pushing you to your limits. It is an amazing environment and I really enjoy the drive it gives me. It’s only been a year but I can’t wait to see what the future has in store as I continue my CrossFit journey.

Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?

A – I was born and raised in Grande Prairie and I am turning 40 in March. I live with my Girlfriend and her 2 boys just east of town.

Q- How long have you been a member at VO2Max?

A – I attended my first bootcamp January 2017

Q – What lead you to start your fitness journey at VO2?

A – In October 2016 I became the heaviest I had ever been and was really out of shape. I dusted off the treadmill and started to exercise a couple times a week. In January my youngest brother had said he went to a bootcamp at VO2, I asked a good friend that had been going for a while if I would die if I went and she said “ya probably, but you should go”. The next Saturday I went and found out what a burpee was.

Q – What is your favorite workout/movement?

A – I can’t say I have a favorite, as I have progressed they all become my favorite. When you can’t climb a rope and all of the sudden you get to the top its your new fav, when you flip the box taller because you can jump higher its your new fav. Pull ups, dead lifts all became favorites as I got stronger. Just not burpee’s yet.

Q – What do you do for work?

A – I am a millwright for a oil and gas company.

Q – What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A – Most people will be surprised to learn I am being considered an athlete so we will let them get used to that first.

If there is anything else you want to add feel free!!

I am grateful for the support and the encouragement from all the coaches at VO2. This is the first time in my life I have stuck with regular exercise for more than 6 months. My friend told me nobody is going to judge you when you’re at VO2 ’cause they are all too busy trying to catch their breath too. She was right.

Q – TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
JA – I’m from Calgary and moved to Wembley in June 2017 for work. I’m passionate about fitness, music, my family & friends, and The Hunger Games.

JB – I am 24 years old, originally from Manitoba but have been in Grande Prairie for almost 3 years. I grew up playing volleyball and competitive softball. If I’m not in the gym I’m usually travelling or really doing anything outdoors.

Q – HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER AT VO2MAX?
JA – For 5 months (July 2017).

JB – I started at VO2Max back in July so just over five months! I competed in WODfest placing second and just recently battle on the border in Lloydminister placing first in the women’s scaled level.

Q – WHAT LEAD YOU TO START YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY AT VO2?
JA – I first started CrossFit in 2014 in Steinbach Manitoba and did it for a couple months. I enjoyed it but when I moved back to Alberta in 2015, I had little motivation to continue. Once I moved up here, I decided I wanted to get back into it after my 2 year hiatus and actually set some goals to work towards. The first time I walked into VO2Max I felt so at home and knew I wanted to stick it out here for the long run!

JB – I had heard so many good things about the gym but lived quite far out of town for the first two years I moved here. I recently moved closer to Grande Prairie and decided it was time I tried it. I have past experience in bodybuilding but wanted to challenge myself and try something new. I started out going to the CrossFit classes 6 days a week and I have since started training with Brett as my coach where my workouts are personalized to my weaknesses. I have found a new love for working out as my workouts are usually fun yet challenging at the same time making me a more competitive athlete. I have also taken more interest in my nutrition and how I can fuel my body to enhance my workouts and better my lifestyle.

Q – WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT/MOVEMENT?
JA – It’s a toss-up between rope climbs, handstand push ups and back squats.

JB – As funny as it sounds I enjoy the workouts that I struggle the most at, it definitely is always a humbling experience to not be able to lift or complete a movement and then slowly over time develop it and be able to do it consistently like a handstand push up.

Q – WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?
JA – I’m a first responder.

JB – Most people already know but if not I am a first responder!

Q – WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
JA – I’ve played piano for almost 20 years and teach as well. Also, I am a rap God…hear me rap lol 😉

JB – One thing that most people don’t know is that I competed nationally in baton twirling until I was 20 years old although my (lack) of gymnastic skills don’t show it!

Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?

A – I’m 32 years old and have been living in GP for about 10 years. I’m married to my beautiful wife Jillian, we have an amazing 16-month-old daughter named Wren, and a 3-year-old Golden Doodle named Fern. Outside the gym I play soccer, mountain bike, x-country and downhill ski.

Q – How long have you been a member at VO2MAX?

A – I started at VO2MAX just after the 2017 CrossFit Open, so that would have been April of this year.

Q – What lead you to start your fitness journey at VO2MAX?

A – I had been previously been training with a strength and conditioning coach for the last 6 years to compete in a race that required a lot of explosive power and to be able to go “flat out” for 90 seconds or less. Unfortunately, that coach moved away and for a year, I just did my own thing without a plan. Before I knew it, I was starting to slump in my training and working out was becoming more of a chore than something I enjoyed doing. In addition, my nutrition wasn’t what it needed to be. So overall, I was feeling really unhealthy. It was at that time that I knew something had to change. I’d always heard a lot of positive things about VO2 from several people I work with but had always been a little hesitant because it was something completely different than I was used to and I was a little intimidated. Looking back, I should have stepped out of my comfort zone and joined sooner as a lot my previous training would transition to CrossFit very well. From where I started to where I am now, I feel so much healthier, both mentally and physically. Working with all the coaches, and Jenn K. with my nutrition, I’ve lost 35 pounds, am injury free, having fun in the gym, and in the best shape of my life.

Q – What is your favourite workout/movement?

A – Hmmm…this is a tough one. Workout, not sure I have one, anything that pushes me into a “dark place”. Movement, right now it’s burpees (I know, I know, I’m a big weirdo), but I also really like any sort of gymnastic movements because it’s something that’s completely new and challenging for me.

Q – What do you do for work?

A – I’m a Firefighter with the Grande Prairie Fire Department

Q – What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?

A – I’m incredibly picky with my socks! I must have a left and right sock (labelled of course). They can’t have little fabric balls in them. They can’t have any holes. They have to fit perfectly. If they don’t meet these criteria, I can’t wear them (e.g. showed up to the gym with two right socks a few months back; socks went back in the gym bag; worked out without socks-true story).

Q – If there is anything else you want to add feel free!

A – Since joining VO2MAX, I can’t believe how incredible the community is here. I can remember the first time that I came to a CrossFit class and within the hour, I think I had every coach, and a ton of members, come up to me, say hi, introduce themselves, and welcome me. It’s this sort of community that anyone can be proud and comfortable being a part of, from the elite CrossFit athlete to the newest member of the gym.

Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?

A – I’m 44 years old, a father of three beautiful girls…Laynie (22yrs), Maddy (14yrs) and Shae (13yrs) and a husband of 15yrs, this past June, to the love of my life Gerry-Lynn. Outside of Crossfit I play competitive volleyball in the Co-ed league here in GP and the beach volleyball league in the summer.

Q – How long have you been a member at Vo2max?

A – I started at VO2Max in the summer of 2012 (I think…that was a long time ago). I started with Tarik personal training.  After 3 years, Tarik moved on and I started Crossfit classes.

Q – What lead you to start your fitness journey at Vo2?

A – At the age of 38 I was suffering from chronic lower back pain and my doctor told me “get used to it, you are getting to the age where that is normal”.  That just didn’t seem right to me.  That combined with my family history of heart conditions I felt it was time to get serious about my health…I wasn’t ready to sit down, take a Robaxacet and wait for a heart attack.

What brought me to VO2Max specifically was that I had met Janine a few years earlier when she trained my wife for a fitness competition. I heard Janine and Brett had started a gym so I stopped in to see what they had to offer.

Q – What is your favourite workout/movement?

A – I really enjoy the gymnastic movements incorporated into Crossfit, pull-ups, C2B, muscle ups (bar or ring) and the HSPU (although it is my most challenging movement).

Q- -What do you do for work?

A – I am a part owner in West Rock Inc. We are a staffing agency geared toward Oil & Gas well operators as well as shutdown support for the Pulp & Paper industry.

Q – What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A – Most times its my age…guess I’m not really good at growing up lol. Beyond that, people get surprised that I actually do have a job…since I do spent a lot of time at V02Max 😉

All I have to add is…the athlete is only as good as his or her coach. The support over the years from Brett, Janine, Ron, Mike, Ryan and Tarik have really challenged me to be the best that I can. The weights keep getting heavier and the reps faster, without their encouragement and the support of the V02Max community, it would all be a lot less satisfying. Everyday, I leave with a smile and a sense of accomplishment. Thanks V02Max

Oh ya…one more thing…I still see the same doctor and now he tells me I’m in better shape than he is 😉

Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?
A- I’m a Proud Football Mom to my 17year old son.. I basically follow him around to games and camps and love every minute of it!

Q – How long have you been a member at Vo2max and what lead you to start your fitness journey ?
A – I registered for the challenge in January 2017 and I have been hooked ever since. I’ve always enjoyed spending time in the gym but for the past few years the gym got dull, I fell out of love with the same old workout routine and I found I wasn’t pushing myself as hard as I should be. Getting myself to the gym was beginning to be more of a chore then something I looked forward to and eventually I stopped going. I tried a few places here and there but knowing Janine from ages ago I thought that Vo2 Max was a gym that was going to push me to my limits and I was right! The facility is top notch, the coaches are knowledgeable, welcoming and really push you to attain your best workout.

Q – What is your favourite workout/movement?
A – Box jumps / DB snatch

Q – What do you do for work?
A – Advertising Specialist at 97.7 Rock

Q – What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
A – That besides going to boot camp at Vo2 max I also practice Pole.. it’s a different type of exercise that I absolutely love!
