Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?

A – I was born and raised in Grande Prairie and I am turning 40 in March. I live with my Girlfriend and her 2 boys just east of town.

Q- How long have you been a member at VO2Max?

A – I attended my first bootcamp January 2017

Q – What lead you to start your fitness journey at VO2?

A – In October 2016 I became the heaviest I had ever been and was really out of shape. I dusted off the treadmill and started to exercise a couple times a week. In January my youngest brother had said he went to a bootcamp at VO2, I asked a good friend that had been going for a while if I would die if I went and she said “ya probably, but you should go”. The next Saturday I went and found out what a burpee was.

Q – What is your favorite workout/movement?

A – I can’t say I have a favorite, as I have progressed they all become my favorite. When you can’t climb a rope and all of the sudden you get to the top its your new fav, when you flip the box taller because you can jump higher its your new fav. Pull ups, dead lifts all became favorites as I got stronger. Just not burpee’s yet.

Q – What do you do for work?

A – I am a millwright for a oil and gas company.

Q – What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A – Most people will be surprised to learn I am being considered an athlete so we will let them get used to that first.

If there is anything else you want to add feel free!!

I am grateful for the support and the encouragement from all the coaches at VO2. This is the first time in my life I have stuck with regular exercise for more than 6 months. My friend told me nobody is going to judge you when you’re at VO2 ’cause they are all too busy trying to catch their breath too. She was right.

Q – TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
JA – I’m from Calgary and moved to Wembley in June 2017 for work. I’m passionate about fitness, music, my family & friends, and The Hunger Games.

JB – I am 24 years old, originally from Manitoba but have been in Grande Prairie for almost 3 years. I grew up playing volleyball and competitive softball. If I’m not in the gym I’m usually travelling or really doing anything outdoors.

Q – HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER AT VO2MAX?
JA – For 5 months (July 2017).

JB – I started at VO2Max back in July so just over five months! I competed in WODfest placing second and just recently battle on the border in Lloydminister placing first in the women’s scaled level.

Q – WHAT LEAD YOU TO START YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY AT VO2?
JA – I first started CrossFit in 2014 in Steinbach Manitoba and did it for a couple months. I enjoyed it but when I moved back to Alberta in 2015, I had little motivation to continue. Once I moved up here, I decided I wanted to get back into it after my 2 year hiatus and actually set some goals to work towards. The first time I walked into VO2Max I felt so at home and knew I wanted to stick it out here for the long run!

JB – I had heard so many good things about the gym but lived quite far out of town for the first two years I moved here. I recently moved closer to Grande Prairie and decided it was time I tried it. I have past experience in bodybuilding but wanted to challenge myself and try something new. I started out going to the CrossFit classes 6 days a week and I have since started training with Brett as my coach where my workouts are personalized to my weaknesses. I have found a new love for working out as my workouts are usually fun yet challenging at the same time making me a more competitive athlete. I have also taken more interest in my nutrition and how I can fuel my body to enhance my workouts and better my lifestyle.

Q – WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT/MOVEMENT?
JA – It’s a toss-up between rope climbs, handstand push ups and back squats.

JB – As funny as it sounds I enjoy the workouts that I struggle the most at, it definitely is always a humbling experience to not be able to lift or complete a movement and then slowly over time develop it and be able to do it consistently like a handstand push up.

Q – WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?
JA – I’m a first responder.

JB – Most people already know but if not I am a first responder!

Q – WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
JA – I’ve played piano for almost 20 years and teach as well. Also, I am a rap God…hear me rap lol 😉

JB – One thing that most people don’t know is that I competed nationally in baton twirling until I was 20 years old although my (lack) of gymnastic skills don’t show it!

Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?

A – I’m 32 years old and have been living in GP for about 10 years. I’m married to my beautiful wife Jillian, we have an amazing 16-month-old daughter named Wren, and a 3-year-old Golden Doodle named Fern. Outside the gym I play soccer, mountain bike, x-country and downhill ski.

Q – How long have you been a member at VO2MAX?

A – I started at VO2MAX just after the 2017 CrossFit Open, so that would have been April of this year.

Q – What lead you to start your fitness journey at VO2MAX?

A – I had been previously been training with a strength and conditioning coach for the last 6 years to compete in a race that required a lot of explosive power and to be able to go “flat out” for 90 seconds or less. Unfortunately, that coach moved away and for a year, I just did my own thing without a plan. Before I knew it, I was starting to slump in my training and working out was becoming more of a chore than something I enjoyed doing. In addition, my nutrition wasn’t what it needed to be. So overall, I was feeling really unhealthy. It was at that time that I knew something had to change. I’d always heard a lot of positive things about VO2 from several people I work with but had always been a little hesitant because it was something completely different than I was used to and I was a little intimidated. Looking back, I should have stepped out of my comfort zone and joined sooner as a lot my previous training would transition to CrossFit very well. From where I started to where I am now, I feel so much healthier, both mentally and physically. Working with all the coaches, and Jenn K. with my nutrition, I’ve lost 35 pounds, am injury free, having fun in the gym, and in the best shape of my life.

Q – What is your favourite workout/movement?

A – Hmmm…this is a tough one. Workout, not sure I have one, anything that pushes me into a “dark place”. Movement, right now it’s burpees (I know, I know, I’m a big weirdo), but I also really like any sort of gymnastic movements because it’s something that’s completely new and challenging for me.

Q – What do you do for work?

A – I’m a Firefighter with the Grande Prairie Fire Department

Q – What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?

A – I’m incredibly picky with my socks! I must have a left and right sock (labelled of course). They can’t have little fabric balls in them. They can’t have any holes. They have to fit perfectly. If they don’t meet these criteria, I can’t wear them (e.g. showed up to the gym with two right socks a few months back; socks went back in the gym bag; worked out without socks-true story).

Q – If there is anything else you want to add feel free!

A – Since joining VO2MAX, I can’t believe how incredible the community is here. I can remember the first time that I came to a CrossFit class and within the hour, I think I had every coach, and a ton of members, come up to me, say hi, introduce themselves, and welcome me. It’s this sort of community that anyone can be proud and comfortable being a part of, from the elite CrossFit athlete to the newest member of the gym.

Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?

A – I’m 44 years old, a father of three beautiful girls…Laynie (22yrs), Maddy (14yrs) and Shae (13yrs) and a husband of 15yrs, this past June, to the love of my life Gerry-Lynn. Outside of Crossfit I play competitive volleyball in the Co-ed league here in GP and the beach volleyball league in the summer.

Q – How long have you been a member at Vo2max?

A – I started at VO2Max in the summer of 2012 (I think…that was a long time ago). I started with Tarik personal training.  After 3 years, Tarik moved on and I started Crossfit classes.

Q – What lead you to start your fitness journey at Vo2?

A – At the age of 38 I was suffering from chronic lower back pain and my doctor told me “get used to it, you are getting to the age where that is normal”.  That just didn’t seem right to me.  That combined with my family history of heart conditions I felt it was time to get serious about my health…I wasn’t ready to sit down, take a Robaxacet and wait for a heart attack.

What brought me to VO2Max specifically was that I had met Janine a few years earlier when she trained my wife for a fitness competition. I heard Janine and Brett had started a gym so I stopped in to see what they had to offer.

Q – What is your favourite workout/movement?

A – I really enjoy the gymnastic movements incorporated into Crossfit, pull-ups, C2B, muscle ups (bar or ring) and the HSPU (although it is my most challenging movement).

Q- -What do you do for work?

A – I am a part owner in West Rock Inc. We are a staffing agency geared toward Oil & Gas well operators as well as shutdown support for the Pulp & Paper industry.

Q – What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A – Most times its my age…guess I’m not really good at growing up lol. Beyond that, people get surprised that I actually do have a job…since I do spent a lot of time at V02Max 😉

All I have to add is…the athlete is only as good as his or her coach. The support over the years from Brett, Janine, Ron, Mike, Ryan and Tarik have really challenged me to be the best that I can. The weights keep getting heavier and the reps faster, without their encouragement and the support of the V02Max community, it would all be a lot less satisfying. Everyday, I leave with a smile and a sense of accomplishment. Thanks V02Max

Oh ya…one more thing…I still see the same doctor and now he tells me I’m in better shape than he is 😉

Q – Tell us a bit about yourself?
A- I’m a Proud Football Mom to my 17year old son.. I basically follow him around to games and camps and love every minute of it!

Q – How long have you been a member at Vo2max and what lead you to start your fitness journey ?
A – I registered for the challenge in January 2017 and I have been hooked ever since. I’ve always enjoyed spending time in the gym but for the past few years the gym got dull, I fell out of love with the same old workout routine and I found I wasn’t pushing myself as hard as I should be. Getting myself to the gym was beginning to be more of a chore then something I looked forward to and eventually I stopped going. I tried a few places here and there but knowing Janine from ages ago I thought that Vo2 Max was a gym that was going to push me to my limits and I was right! The facility is top notch, the coaches are knowledgeable, welcoming and really push you to attain your best workout.

Q – What is your favourite workout/movement?
A – Box jumps / DB snatch

Q – What do you do for work?
A – Advertising Specialist at 97.7 Rock

Q – What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
A – That besides going to boot camp at Vo2 max I also practice Pole.. it’s a different type of exercise that I absolutely love!
